"Jessika Roswall's opportunity in Brussels"

Nyhetsbyrån, October 2024

We are delighted that our article on EU Environment Commissioner designate Jessika Roswall’s opportunity in Brussels has been published in Nyhetsbyrån (in Swedish). I

The article covers the importance of realism over protectionism when it comes to environmental issues, as well as the need to work with, not against business, and why inaction can sometimes be the best option.

"The role of open talent in raising European competitiveness

NE Global, September 2024

We are delighted that our article “The role of open talent in raising European competitiveness” has been published in NE Global.

Following the release of Mario Draghi’s long awaited report on the future of European competitiveness, the words of the American poet Claudia Rankine ring true: the past is a life sentence, a blunt instrument aimed at tomorrow. This is particularly true of the European labour market as we contemplate the future of work from an organisational, social, economic and policy perspective. Despite an exponential growth in technology, many of the principles, processes and mindsets associated with work have not changed in over a century.

"The Future of Work cannot be set in stone"

Brussels Report, September 2024

We are delighted that our article “The Future of Work cannot be set in stone” has been published in Brussels Report.

The EU Platform Work Directive is set to be formally adopted in the coming weeks, and following this EU Member States will have two years to implement the legislation into their national law. As national politicians and officials prepare to get to grips with the implementation, there are a number of issues that they should bear in mind to facilitate the future of work:

▶️The definition of a “digital labour platform” should be clarified

▶️There should be no general presumption of employment

▶️Algorithmic management cannot mean universal human oversight

▶️Remote and flexible work are here to stay

▶️Talent clouds and elastic teams are the now of work

"Policies on Deforestation Show Europe’s Internal Splits"

NE Global, July 2024

We are delighted that our article "Policies on Deforestation Show Europe’s Internal Splits" has been published in NE Global

With a new European Parliament and European Commission set to take office it is vital that a free trade vision for the European Union holds sway in place of the increased isolationism and protectionism of the past few years.

"On the wisdom of economic sanctions"

Brussels Report, June 2024

Delighted that our article "On the wisdom of economic sanctions" has been published in Brussels Report.

Sweden has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine, providing financial aid, humanitarian assistance, and military support. However, imposing sanctions on Russian imports as a form of public relations move represents misguided policy. Such sanctions would inflict economic harm on Sweden without significantly impacting Russia, ultimately amounting to virtue signaling at the expense of the broader strategic interests of both Sweden and the EU.

"EU must resist temptation for Potemkin sanctions"

Emerging Europe, June 2024

I am delighted that my article "EU must resist temptation for Potemkin sanctions on aluminium" has been published in Emerging Europe In this opinion piece I argue that sanctioning aluminium raw materials from Russia will have little impact on Putin's regime but deeply damage the European economy.

“Platform work: getting the right approach for consumers and

NE Global, April 2024

“Platform work: getting the right approach for consumers and workers” has been published in NE Global.

This covers the implementation of the EU Platform Work Directive, and the need to avoid a general presumption of employment at the national level. The article also discusses how modern organisations increasingly blend a mixture of permanent employees, consultants, freelancers and other contingent workers. This reality necessitates the need to create an all-encompassing, holistic approach to talent management and new leadership styles.

"European Green Deal legislation needs to be reconsidered"

Brussels Report, April 2024

"European Green Deal legislation needs to be reconsidered" has been published in Brussels Report. I write that ahead of the EU elections to be held in June 2024, it is vital that the European institutions change tack in order to pursue international partnerships and mutual cooperation on trade, climate and sustainability issues.

“Placing the Single Market at the heart of the EU”

The Brussels Times, February 2024

“Placing the Single Market at the heart of the EU” which has just been published in The Brussels Times.

With EU elections coming up it is important that the EU's biggest success story receives the attention - if not the love - that it deserves. Furthermore, it is time to step away from the protectionism and isolationism that has become endemic in Europe. The Single Market needs to be highlighted in the EU’s trade relations with major global players like the United States and China, as well as the likes of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Instead, however, we are witnessing the rise of a Fortress Europe - characterised by isolationism, increased barriers with international partners (including the Global South) and a move away from global supply chains. It is vital that this reality - coupled with a reduced focus on completing free trade agreements (FTA) - is recognised and addressed for the good of the future development and growth of the European Union. The terrible EU Deforestation Regulation was a perfect example of how not to go about things.

"Facilitating the Future of Work"

Epicenter, January 2024

With discussions on the Platform Worker Rights Directive ongoing, I am delighted to have our article on "Facilitating the Future of Work" published by Epicenter.

The landscape of work is swiftly transforming; it is veering away from traditional employment structures characterised by fixed contracts, physical office setups, and rigid hierarchies. Instead, a more adaptive, project-based workforce is emerging, marked by a blend of in-house staff, consultants, and freelancers. This shift is not merely a trend but also a response to the evolving needs of businesses in a digitally driven era.
